U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the U.S. delegation “came to Taiwan to make it clear that we will not renounce our commitment to Taiwan and that we are proud of our enduring friendship.”

During a meeting with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen in the capital Taipei, she remarked that “we maintain the status quo in Taiwan and do not want anything to happen to it through the use of force”, noting that “we do not agree that anything happens to Taiwan because of the invasion or the use of force.” Given that “China uses international organizations and makes promises to some countries to impose its hegemony.”

Pelosi emphasized that “the US Congress, both Democratic and Republican, is committed to Taiwan’s security and its right to self-defense,” adding that “our message is that the United States stands by Taiwan.”

Pelosi arrived in Taiwan late Tuesday for a visit from a top US official to visit the island following a 1997 visit by her predecessor, Newt Gingrich, amid threats from China, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory.
