A traffic accident in Turkey left 16 dead and 22 injured on Saturday when a bus collided with rescuers who had been called in for another incident, local authorities said. Among the fatalities are four members of the medical teams, three firefighters and two journalists who were covering the original accident, according to the Anadolu agency.
The accident occurred on the Nizip section of the Tarsus-Adana-Gaziantep (TAG) highway in southeastern Turkey, near the border with Syria. Gaziantep Governor Davut Gul said the first accident involved a passenger car that went off the road. The bus then overturned 200 meters behind the accident area and slid until it hit the teams that were at the scene. The bus hit at least one ambulance, a heavy fire engine and the journalists’ vehicle.
Anadolu released images showing a lot of wreckage on the road, the overturned bus, with many signs of destruction, and teams of doctors and firefighters helping people.
The authorities have enabled a telephone line for relatives who cannot communicate with the people involved in the accident.
