Four tourists died and 16 were injured, after a bus accident in Peru, which was returning from a visit to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, Peruvian authorities revealed on Monday.
Two of the tourists killed are of Colombian nationality, while the other two have not yet been formally identified, said the regional government of Cusco (south).
Among the injured are four French, two Greeks, two Canadians, two Israelis, two Argentines, two Peruvians, one Dutch and one person whose nationality has not yet been identified.
EITHER Accident occurred in the early hours of Mondayabout 100 kilometers from the city of Cusco, the ancient Inca capital, the main starting point for tour operators who organize visits to Machu Picchu.
The tourist bus fell “into a ravine with more than 100 meters” at a time when there was fog in the area, said the Minister of Labor and Tourism of Peru, Roberto Sánchez.
Part of the wounded will be transferred to Lima, in a plane chartered by the Air Force.he added.
Road accidents are frequent in Peru, mainly due to the state of the road network, speeding or lack of signage.
In early August, 16 people were killed when a bus crashed into a ravine in central Junín province.
About 5,000 tourists on average visit Machu Picchu daily, built in the 15th century by the Inca emperor Pachacutec, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and listed as one of the wonders of the world.
