Three men were burned alive by a group of people in Guatemala following suspicions of kidnapping and murder of an 11-year-old boy.
The case took place last Monday in the city of Colotenango. When the population became aware of the kidnapping, the “hunt for men” began -two 24-year-olds and another 38- to find the identity of the criminals.
Searched for by some 6,000 people, they were located and handed over to the police. When they were about to go to trial, they were kidnapped by the people, doused with gasoline and burned.
The Spanish newspaper El Mundo reports that the kidnappers sent the parents a photo of the minor with one of the kidnappers who was armed with a shotgun. they still asked a ransom of 100,000 quetzales (13,300 euros) so they could retrieve the child.
The couple, who never contacted authorities, were unable to deliver the money and the boy was later killed and buried in a three-meter-deep septic tank.
Given the circumstances and the state of decomposition of the bodies, the National Civil Police, Guatemalan authorities, could not identify those responsible, or responsible, for the heinous crime. The Huehuetenango Attorney General’s Office has already said that it is investigating the case, also admitting that it is possible that there were no detainees in the process given the high number of people involved.
The number of homicides in Guatemala has been on the rise, making Guatemalans increasingly lose confidence in the authorities and want to take justice into their own hands. Data from the country’s Ministry of the Interior reveal that the number of homicides is between 16 and 17 per 100,000 inhabitants.
