The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the ‘green’ Annalena Baerbock, reiterated today that Germany will continue to offer military aid to Ukraine, including the supply of heavy weapons, in the face of a war that, she warned, “will last for years.”
“It is clear to me that Ukraine defends our freedom and our peaceful order, so we will continue to provide financial and military support for as long as necessary,” said the head of the Foreign Affairs portfolio of the Government of Olaf Scholz, in statements to the newspaper “Bild”, quoted by the news agency Efe.
The world must assume “that this war will last for years”, since “unfortunately, the Russian government has a fixed idea of breaking Ukraine and its people”, added Baerbock.
“We will do whatever is necessary so that this objective does not materialize,” the minister promised, expressing her support for Ukraine’s ambition to recover Crimea and recalling that the international community did not recognize the “illegitimate annexation” of the peninsula in 2014. for Russia.
Baerbock, like Economy Minister Robert Habeck, defended the most critical line against Moscow since before Scholz’s tripartite formation between social democrats, ‘greens’ and liberals.
Both ‘green’ ministers were already demanding the end of Russia’s energy dependency even before the beginning of the Russian invasion and in their opposition times they spoke out against the construction of the second Nord-Stream gas pipeline, whose implementation paralyzed Sholz last february
Baerbock is now rejecting proposals from its liberal partners to revive Nord Stream 2 as an emergency solution to gas shortages.
The minister was also against postponing the closure of the last three nuclear power plants in Germany, which, according to the plan to abandon this source of energy, should be completed by the end of this year.
Scholz suggested that the activity of these plants could last a relatively short period, while the Liberals propose that the operation be maintained until 2024 and even that those that were deactivated be reactivated for two years.
The ‘greens’, for the moment, consider it unnecessary to postpone the disconnection of the three still active, although they do not rule it out categorically.
