U.S. President Joe Biden extended for one more year “the national emergency system declared in Executive Order 13848 of September 12, 2018, amid the risk of external interference in elections in the United States of America and undermining public confidence in it, to come into effect after September 2022”.

In a letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President of the U.S. Senate, he pointed out that “although there has been no evidence that any foreign country has altered the voting results or vote count during any U.S. election, outside forces have historically sought to benefit from a free and transparent American political system.

This state of emergency system has been in place since September 12, 2018, when it was introduced by the administration of former President Donald Trump. This decree provides the legal basis for the imposition of various sanctions on parties that the United States suspects of trying to influence the results and conduct of elections or harm the electoral system in the country.
