South Korea on Thursday proposed a meeting with North Korea to resume reunions of families separated by war, despite tensions between the two countries over Pyongyang’s nuclear policy.
The South and the North must face the painful aspects of reality. We have to resolve the issue before the term separate families disappears,” said South Korean Unification Minister Kwon Young-se.
“We must use all possible means immediately to reach quick and fundamental measures“, he added.
After the 1950-53 Korean War, millions of people were suddenly divided by what is the most militarized border in the world. Decades later, most do not know if family members are still alive.
Seoul and Pyongyang have occasionally allowed separated families to reunite temporarily, but no such reunions have taken place since 2018.
