President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that the Russian army recaptured the strategic city of Izyum in the east of the country as part of a large-scale counterattack.

“Ukrainian forces have liberated hundreds of our cities and towns, and recently Balaklya, Izyum and Kobyansk,” Zelensky said, referring to the three strategic areas the army recently recaptured.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, General Valery Zalogniy, said in a statement on social networks that “his fighters this month recaptured areas with a total area of more than 3,000 square kilometers from Russian troops.”

It is noteworthy that Ukrainian forces have begun to carry out counterattacks against positions controlled by Russian forces since last week, in particular to restore the Kherson region in the south of the country, confirming that they “have broken through the Russian defenses to a depth of 50 km and restored more than 20 cities.”
