Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he will not support the idea of resuming the transit of Russian ammonia exports through his country unless Russia returns Ukrainian prisoners of war, noting that he has submitted this arrangement to the UN to resume Russian ammonia exports through Ukraine to reduce the global fertilizer shortage.
The UN proposed pumping gaseous ammonia owned by the Russian company Uralchem for fertilizer production through a pipeline to the border with Ukraine, where this pipeline, which was closed after the outbreak of the crisis between Moscow and Kyiv, could pump up to 2.5 million tons of ammonia annually from the Russian Volga region to the Ukrainian port of Pvedny on the Black Sea.
Notably, Zelenskiy warned last month that Russia would prosecute captured Ukrainian soldiers as Kyiv celebrated its 31st anniversary of independence, while the United Nations suggested that shortages in key fertilizers, of which Russia is a major source, caused a significant increase in food prices. The following year, she warned that the world could face a food crisis that could reach the point of famine.
