Lt. Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, Vice-President of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, after meeting with Council Chairman Lt. Gen. Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan, indicated that “we reaffirmed our previous commitment to removing the military establishment from power and leaving governance to civilians.”

In a statement on social media, he indicated that the meeting with the chairman of the Sovereignty Council categorically acknowledged that “civilians elect two heads of the Sovereignty Council and civilian ministers”, noting that after that, the military institution “will completely abandon its task stipulated by the constitution and law “.

Sudan has seen unrest since al-Burhan led a military coup last October that toppled a major civilian bloc in power, sparking widespread international condemnation. Since then, almost weekly anti-coup protests, a growing economic crisis and an increase in inter-ethnic clashes in remote areas of Sudan have exacerbated the unrest.
