The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, toned down his assertion that “the end of the (Covid-19) pandemic is approaching”, warning that “there is still a long way to go” before the announcement of the end of the crisis.

Ghebreyesus told reporters last week that “the world has never been in a better position to end the epidemic and the end is near.”

And US President Joe Biden went even further when he said in a television interview broadcast last Sunday that the epidemic in the US was “over.”

But speaking to the media again, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York today Thursday, World Health Organization chief Tedros Ghebreyesus looked less optimistic than last week as he explained that “The ability to see the end does not mean that we have reached the end.

He reiterated his claims that the world is in the best position to end the pandemic, with the number of weekly deaths continuing to decline – now just 10 percent from what it was at its peak in January 2021.
