Four Portuguese films, including “Alma Viva” by Cristèle Alves Meira, a Portuguese candidate for an Oscar nomination, were selected for the Valladolid Film Festival, which will take place in October in Spain, the organization revealed.
According to the program announced for the 67th edition, “Alma Viva” is part of the official selection of the festival, it is Best Achievement Award Nomineebeing among “the most anticipated films of contemporary auteur cinema”.
“Alma Viva” is the first fiction feature film by the Portuguese-French director Cristèle Alves Meira and it premiered this year at the Critics’ Week, in parallel to the Cannes festival.
The film, a microcosm of family ties, emigration, mysticism and Trás-os-Montes culture, is Portugal’s candidate for a nomination for Oscar for best international filmin 2023.
The Valladolid festival will also feature three Portuguese short films that have already made their way into international festivals. They are “De Flávio”, by Pedro Cabeleira, “Ice Merchants”, by João Gonzalez, and “O Homem do Basura”, by Laura Gonçalves.
“De Flávio”, which competed in Berlin, is Pedro Cabeleira’s latest film, co-written with Diogo Figueira and actress Ana Vilaça, who stars in it. The film tells the story of Márcia, a woman who aspires to success and who, at the same time, tries to overcome the difficulties of being a single mother.
“Ice Merchants” and “The Garbage Man”, both animated, arrive in Valladolid after having been at the Toronto festival in Canada, and having been honored at other festivals.
“The Garbage Man” deals with memories and memories, based on the life story of “Uncle Button”, who worked as an emigrant in France as a garbage man, according to the synopsis.
“Mercaderes de Hielo”, by João Gonzalez, is about a father and a son, who produce ice in the inhospitable house where they live, and from which they parachute every day to sell it in the village, at the foot of the mountain .
The 67th edition of the Valladolid International Film Festival will take place from October 22 to 29, with Ireland as the guest country and with sections dedicated to filmmakers Pier Paolo Pasolini and Juan Antonio Bardem.
