More than 400 migrants arrive on the island of Lampedusa, Italy

After the wave of arrivals on Sunday, this Wednesday some 430 migrants arrived on the island of Lampedusa, in Italy. They will now be sent to the only reception center on the island.

Some 430 migrants arrived Wednesday night on the southern Italian island of Lampedusa, which has been facing a wave of arrivals since last Sunday.

Migrants traveled on board ten small boats until they were intercepted by boats of the Italian Coast Guard and the Financial Guard (border police).

After night operations, about a hundred migrants arrived this Wednesday morning at the Favaloro port of Lampedusa in wooden boats, from where they will depart for the only reception center on the island.

The center, equipped to house around 400 people, currently has about 3,200 migrants awaiting identification.

The government delegation of Agrigento (south) ordered the transfer of hundreds of immigrants to Sicily, in an attempt to alleviate the situation.

During surveillance operations Wednesday night, Coast Guard boats recovered the bodies of two women who died in a shipwreck last Monday in which 62 people were rescued.

According to the latest data published by the Italian Ministry of the Interior, 33,480 immigrants arrived on the Italian coast, almost four times more than in the same period last year (8,432).
