The US is seeing a decline in air quality as smoke from active fires in Canada drifts south. From New York to South Carolina, authorities are asking people to stay home.

The city of NY, in the United States of America, woke up this Tuesday under a gray sky and an orange sun. The cause of this heavy environment is smoke clouds from active wildfires in Canada, which covered a swath of the eastern and northern US.

This Wednesday the smoke and ashes, originating mainly from Nova Scotia and Quebec, sounded the US Public Health Alerts. Since 1960, New York has not registered a such a bad level of air quality — with the index reaching 235, which translates to “very unhealthy” (very unhealthy, in Portuguese), according to The New York Times —, thus making it the city with the most polluted air in the world. The city’s mayor, Eric Adams, was quoted by ABC News as saying the situation was expected to worsen during the day.
