A 57-year-old Thai woman had her leg amputated after getting caught on a conveyor belt at Don Mueang International Airport in Bangkok, The Guardian reported.

On her way to her flight to Nakhon Si Thammarat, a province in the south of the country, the woman tripped over her suitcase, fell and ended up with her leg trapped at the end of the treadmill.

Airport medical teams quickly rescued the victim and transported her to a local hospital. Subsequently, she was transferred to another hospital, where she was underwent surgery to amputate his leg above the knee.

According to the airport director, the rescuers reported that it would not be possible to reattach the amputated limb to the leg. However, the Thai woman reportedly requested to be transferred to another hospital to reassess this possibility.

“On behalf of Don Mueang International Airport, I would like to express my sincere condolences for the accident,” airport director Karun Thanakuljeerapat was quoted as saying in the British newspaper. “I would like to insist that we will make sure that an accident of this type does not happen again,” he said, adding that the airport will assume full responsibility for medical expenses and is open to negotiations regarding compensation.

Images of the accident are circulating in the social networks and show the victim seated with their left leg trapped under the end of the treadmill. Next to her is a suitcase whose the wheels will have been torn off by the carpet. According to Karun, the parts of the suitcase were found under the moving walkway, however it is not certain if they are related to the accident.

The airport director also added that the conveyor belt service is checked daily and the inspection is carried out monthly. The causes of the accident are under investigation.
