Portugal resumed importing Russian gas six months after the last spill

The ship in question departed from the port of Sabetta, in Russia, and arrived in Sines early last Saturday morning, leaving the Portuguese port on Sunday.

After more than six months without importing Russian gas, Portugal once again received, last Saturday, a shipment of natural gas from Russia, reported Expresso, which consulted data from REN – National Energy Networks and the Administration of the Port of Sines ( APS).

The unloading of Russian natural gas was carried out through the Davydov ship, almost 300 meters long and flying the Cypriot flag. The ship departed the port of Sabetta, Russia, and arrived in Sines early Saturday morning, leaving the port on Sunday.

Information from REN’s Datahub platform, cited by Expresso, specifies that Saturday’s discharge amounted to 1,093 gigawatt hours (GWh), being the only gas entry made by the Sines terminal in the first days of May. In the previous month, five liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels had entered, two from Nigeria and three from the United States of America (USA).

Portugal had not received Russian gas for six months, when in October 2023 a ship with 1,090 GWh arrived in Sines. Nigeria was the country with the greatest weight in Portuguese imports, followed by the United States and Russia, with a value of 8%.
