Porto IPO promotes international summit on oncology and innovation

The first edition of the IPO Porto Summit has almost 1,000 registered and will take place at the Portuguese School of Oncology with around 90 thematic sessions.

The Portuguese Institute of Oncology (IPO) of Porto promotes, starting Thursday, a international summit on oncology and innovationan event that aims to reaffirm the institution’s commitment to the European Plan Against Cancer, the president stated this Wednesday.

“The Porto IPO is at the forefront of participation in European projects related to the European Plan to Fight Cancer. We are involved in more than a dozen projects and studies, most of them in the area of oncology research. But some of them are also related to public health policies and the organization of cancer care in the European context,” said Júlio Oliveira.

For Lusa, and highlighting the link between Porto’s IPO and the European Organization of Oncology Institutes (OECI), the person in charge pointed out as an objective “contribute to greater homogeneity in healthcare in oncology within the different European countries and within each European country.”

The first edition of the IPO Porto Summit, which begins on Europe Day to celebrate and commemorate the Schuman Declaration and which on Tuesday had almost 1,000 registered, will take place in Portuguese School of Oncology (EPOP)at the Porto IPO, with around 90 thematic sessions.

The program integrates a science and research aspect, as well as functional and social aspects, with the objective of “discussing the essential support areas for the oncological ecosystem.”

Among the topics to be discussed, the organization highlights viruses, vaccines, transplants, immunotherapy, CAR-T cells, non-pharmacological treatments, clinical research, pharmacogenomics and precision medicine.

“Cancer treatment, in recent decades, has become increasingly complex. If we are aware of one thing, it is that, to solve complex problems, we cannot do it in isolation. And it’s not just with science, medications and treatments that we can offer the best level of care. It is necessary to work in other dimensions and involve other professionals who are almost always in the shadows, but who are essential,” added Júlio Oliveira.

Remembering that “sometimes patients know the doctor, the nurse, occasionally the pharmacist and little else,” Júlio Oliveira highlighted the importance of “involving the entire community in the discussion, both those who interact directly with the patient, as well as the back office professionals, those behind the scenes who make everything work.”

In this international summit, which ends on Saturday and is part of the celebrations of the V0th anniversary of Porto’s IPO, In addition to national and foreign personalities who will provide contributions in the field of oncology and innovation, the institution wants, “also and with equal importance”, to involve the business community, the third sector, patient organizations, as well as the volunteer movement.

“We have to discuss the most innovative things that are being done not only in terms of technology, but also in terms of organization. We want to talk about what is done best at the institution and receive contributions from guests who will share good practices and good examples from the clinical and non-clinical area. For example, Assistance areas are essential.“, highlighted Júlio Oliveira.

On Saturday, at 11:30 a.m., in the plenary session of the eventand to address the topic “IPO Porto, the city, the northern region and Europe”, the mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira, the rector of the University of Porto, António Sousa Pereira, as well as António Cunha, were present. from the Northern Regional Coordination and Development Commission, and Luís Castro Reis, from Sonae.
