Lousada creates a prize of 20 thousand euros for scientific research in health sciences

The Chamber of Lousada, in the district of Porto, created the Dr. Mário Fonseca Prize, endowed with 20 thousand euros, to promote scientific research in health sciences, the municipality reported today.

According to the municipality, the application period extends from June 1 to June 30, and can be submitted by researchers with PhD less than 10 years ago..

The chamber guarantees a value of 10 thousand euros for the prize, but support from public and private entities is allowed to increase that amount.

According to the city council, so far a company that has contributed 10,000 euros has joined, increasing the value of the prize to 20 thousand eurosin this first edition.

The Dr. Mário Fonseca Award honors a local doctor who became known as “the people’s doctor,” for having dedicated his professional life to medicine and clinical support for the most disadvantaged.

This first edition of the award has as its ambassador Manuel Sobrinho Simõesresearcher and pathologist won the 2002 Pessoa Prize for his research in the field of oncologyand as president of the jury the investigator Flavia Sousa.

Collaborating academic entities and jury members include the Institute of Biomedicine (iBiMED) – University of Aveiro, the Institute of Health Research and Innovation (i3s) – University of Porto, the Institute of Molecular Medicine (IMM) – University of Lisbon, the Portuguese Institute of Oncology of Porto Francisco Gentil (IPO-Porto), the University Institute of Health Sciences (CESPU), LYRIS, Higher School of Sciences and the Order of Doctors.

The winner is announced in September.
