The Chamber of Elvas announced that the celebrations will take place in Praça da República and next to the Cathedral, in the same area of the historic center of the city, on Saturday, at 10 p.m., a concert will take place.
Musical, audiovisual and pyrotechnic shows mark this weekend the celebrations of the 12th anniversary of the classification of Elvas (Portalegre) as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the city council announced this Friday.
In a statement, the Chamber of Elvas announced that the celebrations will take place in Praça da República and next to the Cathedral, in the same area of the city’s historic centre.
On Saturday, at 10 p.m., there will be a concert by the Historical Choir, made up of 20 people, with the band pop rock the giftin a show where music “meets” heritage.

A multimedia show is scheduled for 11:35 p.m. and will be projected onto the Cathedral, followed by another fireworks display in the early hours of Sunday, starting at 12:45 a.m.
On Sunday night, at 9.30 pm, Bandidos do Cante will perform and, an hour and a half later, the public will be able to witness a new multimedia show projected in the Cathedral.
Another fireworks show is planned from 11:10 p.m., an initiative that puts an end to the celebrations.
The classification of the bastioned fortifications of Elvas as a World Heritage Site, in the category of cultural assets, took place on June 30, 2012, at the 36th session of the World Heritage Committee of the United Nations Educational Organization, Science and Culture (UNESCO), in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
The set of Elvas fortifications classified by UNESCO, whose foundation dates back to the reign of D. Sancho II, is the largest in the world in the typology of land wall fortifications, having a perimeter of eight to 10 kilometers and an area of 300 hectares.
At the time, two forts were classified, Santa Luzia, from the 17th century, and Graça, from the 18th century, three forts from the 19th century, the three medieval walls and the 17th century wall, in addition to the Amoreira Aqueduct.
Classified as a National Heritage Site in 1910, Forte da Graça, an 18th-century military monument located two kilometres north of the city of ElvasIt is one of the greatest symbols of the bastioned fortresses in the border areas.
