Live/ UK sends 650 defence missiles to Ukraine, Zelensky to Germany

London has listened to kyiv’s requests for more means to defend its skies and has sent 650 air defence missiles to Ukraine. Zelensky is meeting the German chancellor today, before meeting Ramstein.

  • UK sends 650 air defence missiles to kyiv; Zelensky meets German chancellor

    The Ukrainian president is due to arrive in Germany today, where he is expected to meet Olaf Scholz, before leaving for Ramstein, where he will take part in a meeting of some 50 countries that provide military support to Ukraine. He will request more long-range missiles, permission to use them on Russian territory and air defence equipment.

    But London has already heeded kyiv’s calls and will send 650 air defence missiles to Ukraine, which are expected to arrive in the country by the end of this year, according to Reuters.

    This support from the United Kingdom, worth 192 million euros, was announced by the British Defence Minister just before leaving for the meeting of the Ukrainian Defence Assistance Group in Ramstein.


  • Zelensky asks Macron for permission to attack Russian military airfields

    Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has asked his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron for permission from his partners to attack airfields that Russia uses to bomb Ukrainian territory.

    “We urgently need permission from our partners to attack the airfields from which bomb carriers and guided missiles take off, so we count on the unity of our allies on this issue,” Zelensky said.

    Zelensky also briefed Macron on Ukraine’s needs in terms of air defence, electronic warfare systems, armoured vehicles and artillery, after which further contacts were agreed.

    “On the eve of the meeting of the Ramstein Group Contact Group [Grupo de Ajuda à Defesa da Ucrânia]We discussed defence cooperation, the preparation of a new military aid package by France and the possibility of joint production of certain types of weapons,” he added.
