The Taliban prohibits the publication of images of living beings

The law published in the summer with 35 articles has not been strictly applied, but now the Taliban regime says it will do so gradually: images of living beings are contrary to Islamic law, it argues.

The Taliban government of Afghanistan banned the media from publishing images of living beings, adding that journalists in different provinces had already been warned about the gradual implementation of the measure.

“HE The law applies throughout Afghanistan. (…) and it will be implemented gradually,” Saiful Islam Khyber, spokesperson for the Ministry of Promotion and Prevention of Virtue, told the French news agency AFP this Monday, arguing that images of living beings are contrary to Islamic law.

During the summer, the authorities enacted a law of 35 articles to “promote virtue and prevent vice” among the populationaccording to the sharia (Islamic law), imposed in the country since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021.

The text contains several measures aimed at the media, including a ban on publishing images of living beings, “Content hostile to sharia and religion” or that “humiliate Muslims”.

However, several aspects of this text have not yet been strictly enforced and photographs of people continue to be regularly posted on social media.

Images of living beings were banned throughout the country when it was ruled by Taliban authorities between 1996 and 2001.
