North and Galicia defend that the Porto-Vigo line will change the “connectivity paradigm”

The high-speed rail connection is planned for 2032 and the region calls on governments to “join forces” to execute the project. The public tender should be launched in 2026.

The Galicia-Northern Portugal Euroregion considered this Tuesday that the completion of the Porto-Vigo high-speed railway line (Spain) is “very important” for both countries because “it will completely change the connectivity paradigm.”

“This, for us, It is something that will totally change our connectivity paradigm. and, therefore, it is something that we wanted to happen yesterday, we wanted it to happen today and we hope it will happen in 2032, as the Government has been saying,” said the president of the Northern Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR-N ) and the outgoing president of the Galicia – Northern Portugal Work Community, António Cunha.

At the XIII plenary session of the Galicia – Northern Portugal Work Community, which took place in Matosinhos, in the district of Porto, António Cunha highlighted that when this euroregion has high speed it will be at distances of 30 minutes to one hour.

Therefore, he added: “The entire Euroregion will function in a totally different way”.

In his opinion, this high-speed railway line is “structural from the point of view of mobility” because it will connect the Euroregion with Europe and the world.

Highlighting the importance of this connection for Portugal and Spain, the president of the Regional Government of Galicia and new president of the Galicia – Northern Portugal Work Community, Alfonso Rueda Valenzuela, highlighted that high speed will profoundly change communications, interpersonal relationships and the connections between two countries.

In your opinion, Governments have to join forces.something that is happening, to make this connection a reality that is “absolutely fundamental.”

The connection between Porto and Vigo, in Galicia (Spain), scheduled for 2032It will have stations at Francisco Sá Carneiro airport, Braga, Ponte de Lima and Valença (Viana do Castelo district).

Last week, the vice president of Infrastructure of Portugal (IP), Carlos Fernandes, stated that he intends to start studies of the Porto-Vigo high-speed railway line in early 2025, to launch a public tender in mid-2026.

“The goal is to launch the Environmental Impact Assessment project early next year. The intention is to be in a position to launch this tender for this APP [parceria público-privada]in mid-2026, as planned,” he stated.
