The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, is “deeply concerned about the continued escalation (of violence) in the Middle East,” following the Israeli attacks against Iran, his spokesperson said in a statement this Saturday.
Antonio Guterresurgently reiterates its call to all parties to cease all military actions, including in Gaza and Lebanonso that they do everything possible to avoid a generalized regional war and return to the path of diplomacy,” the note reads.
Israel announced this Saturday that it had carried out “precise and targeted” strikes in Iran in response to the October 1 attack, targeting in particular missile production sites, while Tehran reported “limited damage.”
These bombings come in the context of regional tensions exacerbated last year by the war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas, and its repercussions in neighboring Lebanon, where the Israeli army is fighting Hezbollah.
These two Islamist movements are allies of Iran, which arms and finances them.
On October 1, Tehran fired around 200 missiles at Israel, including, for the first time, several hypersonic missiles.
Israel had promised to retaliate against Iran for this attack.
