Laginha de Sousa, administrator of the BdP and former president of the stock exchange, on court for the CMVM

The director of the Bank of Portugal Luis Laginha de Sousa It will be the name chosen to replace Gabriel Bernardino in the presidency of the CMVM, after the latter left office for health reasons. The Eco newspaper confirmed, with two sources, the rumors that circulated in the sector, a few weeks ago, that the former president of the Euronext stock market would be the name chosen to head the market supervisor.

Contacted by the Observer, Luís Laginha de Sousa did not comment, as did an official source from the Ministry of Finance, who could not yet be contacted. The economist is at the end of his mandate at the Bank of Portugal and, therefore, should leave the institution headed by Mário Centeno.

However, the fact that one man replaces another (Gabriel Bernardino) could be an obstacle since the framework law of the regulatory bodies says, in its article 17, that “the appointment of the chairman of the board of directors must guarantee gender alternation ”. . Before Gabriel Bernardino, who was in office for a short time, the president had been Gabriela Figueiredo Dias.

Luís Laginha de Sousa has a degree in Economics and an MBA, both from Universidade Católica, and was at Euronext Lisboa from 2005 to 2016, first as administrator and then as president. He joined the Bank of Portugal for a five-year term that ends this month.
