The designated director of the Bank of Portugal (BdP) Francisca Guedes de Oliveira rejected this Tuesday that the collaboration she had with the Socialist Party (PS) affects her “honesty and independence”, guaranteeing that she has always acted “as a technician”.
“It is true that I collaborated with the Socialist Party, publicly, in the macroeconomic scenario, and I do not hide that I have already participated in other discussion forums, always as a technique, it was never in a political quality“, said the professor of the Porto Catholic Business School during a hearing in the Budget and Finance Committee (COF) of the Assembly of the Republic.
“It’s not like I had any personal issues with being one. [numa qualidade política]but because I always saw my intervention as a civic intervention,” he added.
The hearing took place within the framework of the appointment of Francisca Guedes de Oliveira for the position of director of the Board of Directors of the BdP, since her appointment by the Council of Ministers depends on the prior opinion of the COF.
Francisca Guedes de Oliveira pointed out that the “technical knowledge and skills” she possesses are at the base of her “civic performance”, but defended that “this does not interfere at all” with the “exemption” she has shown in the functions she has performed. . she has acted to date, specifically in AICEP.
“We all have more or less ideological proximities, more or less evident, with the right, the left, the PS, the PSD or other parties in our system. The truth is that the fact that, in my case, it is public makes it much easier to scrutinize and I think that’s a good thing.“, he emphasized.
“I guarantee you that, as in all my activity to date – that is, in macroeconomics classes, where it is sometimes difficult to be impartial so that students understand that I am not saying that something is right or wrong – the exemption is part out of my way of being and being and I always see my interventions more as civic than political, ”she added.
