The Formula 1 calendar will include six sprint races from 2023, double the current one, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) decided on Tuesday, although the grand prizes that will receive them are not known.
“I am pleased to be able to confirm that six road races will form part of the championship from 2023, building on the success of the new format first introduced in 2021,” rejoiced Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali.
On the weekends in question, qualifying is brought forward one day to Friday, with an extra 100km sprint race on Saturday setting the starting grid for Sunday’s grand prix.
“The sprint offers action over three days with every rider fighting for something from the Friday start to the main event on Sunday, adding more excitement to the weekend. Feedback from fans, teams, promoters and partners has been very positive and the format is giving a new dimension to Formula 1. And we all want to ensure its future success.”
Silverstone in the UK, Monza in Italy and Interlagos in Brazil hosted the first trio of sprint events in 2021, while Imola (Italy), Red Bull Ring (Austria) and again Interlagos were slated to host those races this campaign. .
“This is another example of the continued growth and prosperity of motorsport. In close collaboration with Stefano Domenicali and the FOM [Formula One Management Group]we have completed a comprehensive analysis of the impact of the additional sprint sessions and have adjusted the relevant parameters of our work to ensure they continue to be regulated at the highest level,” said FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
