Accusations of monopoly, requests for division and even incentives for the dismissal of some officials marked Ticketmaster’s hearing in the Senate. One of those responsible for the ticket sales platform for live shows went to the heart of American democracy on Tuesday to report what happened with the sale of tickets for the “Eras” tour by singer Taylor Swift.
On November 15, 2022, approx. 14 million users went to the Ticketmaster website to buy tickets for the singer’s concerts in the United States, but “only” 2.4 million tickets were sold for the more than 50 concerts, all in stadiums. It could just be a case of excessive searching, but it wasn’t. In this pre-sale, a specific code was needed to proceed with the purchase and many of the fans did not get it (it ends up increasing the ticket prices in the secondary market). Ticketmaster ended up canceling general sales for the remaining dates, citing “extraordinary pressure on the systems” and “insufficient ticket inventory”.
If the fans didn’t like it, let alone the singer, who criticized the company and recalled having asked Ticketmaster if it could meet the demand, receiving affirmative answers. In the international press there was talk of a “fiasco” with input from Taylor Swift. The fans rallied and decided to put pressure on the company. The case quickly gained prominence and soon reached the political authorities.
swiftonomics. Will Taylor Swift be able to break Ticketmaster’s alleged monopoly?
