Russian immunologist Nikolai Kryuchkov revealed which groups are at risk of getting monkeypox and need to be vaccinated against it.
In an interview with Radio “Sputnik”, the scientist indicated that, according to data from the World Health Organization, several hundred people have been infected with monkeypox in various countries of the world. The first cases of monkeypox can be reported in Russia within the next 3-6 months, so work must be done to create an effective vaccine against it.
“It’s hard to predict the exact moment, but transmission of the disease to Russia is likely in the next 3 to 6 months,” he said.
And if health institutions work effectively, he added, monkeypox will not be a serious threat to Russians.
He said: “The practices of other countries have shown that if health institutions take the necessary steps with the necessary speed, the spread of the disease can be slowed, but vigilance remains important nonetheless.”
It added that the choice of measures to prevent the spread of the virus depends on the particular situation. In Russia, vaccination may be needed against groups at risk of smallpox, especially those who, because of their profession, have come into contact with patients and may be infected, such as medical staff, staff at checkpoints in border, as well as emergency personnel. services.
The scientist points out that worldwide, the spread of monkeypox cannot be controlled except by the development of a special vaccine against the disease. Because without that, it would be difficult to control the spread of the virus in West Africa.
He said: “A vaccine against monkeypox must be invented, as it is difficult to control the spread of the disease, especially in endemic areas of West Africa, where the situation has worsened in recent years. If there is a vaccine against the disease, “It will be more effective than the smallpox vaccine. Populations in endemic areas can be vaccinated. This is the best way to prevent disease in the world. ”
