A new study has found that mountains in Taiwan are growing faster than human nails.

Taiwan is a “unique natural laboratory” for studying geological processes in real time due to rapid mountain formation, frequent earthquakes and extreme weather conditions.

Researchers from the University of Connecticut and the University of Oregon conducted a study to understand the evolution of Taiwan’s mountains over time. After analyzing ancient sedimentary rocks collected from different parts of Taiwan’s mountain belt, a team of researchers measured the isotopic composition of organic matter to determine the altitude at which ancient plants grew.

This made it possible to obtain valuable information about the history and height of the mountains. Interestingly, the mountains in Taiwan on average grow faster than nails every year, according to the authors of the article.

The results obtained are crucial for understanding the complex interactions between atmospheric, climatic and tectonic processes. in research
