Inflation. Mayor of Mira wants government support for municipalities

The mayor of Mira, Raúl Almeida, defended this Wednesday the need for the Government to support the municipalities, as it did with the package of measures to support family income.

“I believe that the Government, in the Budget for 2023, must include measures to support the municipalities. It is supporting families, and good” and “it will also present [quinta-feira] support for companies, and good”, but “the municipalities also need” support, said this Wednesday the mayor of Mira, in the district of Coimbra, during the meeting of the Chamber.

The mayor stressed that the municipalities are affected, specifically in school transportation, in the increase in the cost of school meals, in the increase in the value of energy, as well as in the rise in fuel prices, in addition to cuts in the 2022 State Budget itself.

It is very important that the chambers have “financial conditions” to carry out works and take advantage of existing financial instruments, said Raúl Almeida, in statements to the Lusa agency.

“We run the risk of not being able to make capital investments, investments in works, practically we are left with current expenses, which are electricity, water and employee payments, so that is one of the problems,” he stressed.

Considering all these aspects, the mayor of Mira defends that the Government “should also look at the municipalities” and their “problems”.

At Wednesday’s meeting, the municipal executive approved setting the rate of the Municipal Property Tax (IMI) at the legal minimum of 0.3% for urban buildings and 0.8% for rural buildings, as well as the reduction of this tax for families with dependents.

The IMI reduction will be 70 euros for families with three or more dependents, 40 euros for families with two dependents and 20 euros for families with one dependent.

Support for families of around 50% was also approved for the expansion of preschool activities for the 2022/2023 academic year.

These proposals, approved this Wednesday by the Chamber, will be presented to the Municipal Assembly on September 29.

Raúl Almeida concluded that he could increase taxes, increasing the IMI and, in this way, increase the income of the Municipality, reinforcing the municipal budget, however, he considers that, in this period of inflation, “it would not be fair [para os munícipes] or it would not be correct” to be “increasing the municipal tax”.
