The leader of the Brothers of Italy (FdI), Giorgia Meloni, said Monday that she will not “betray” the Italian people and said she has “a responsibility” to those who voted for the right-wing and far-right coalition. in Sunday’s election.
“This is a moment of responsibility. (…) It is a moment in which, if you want to be part of history, you must realize that we have a responsibility with the millions of people who chose us. We are not going to betray him, as we have never done before,” Meloni said.
The leader is about to become the first woman to head the Italian government after her party won around 26% of the vote.
“If we are called to govern the nation, we will do it for everyone, to unite the people, valuing what unites and not what divides. We are not at the finish line, but at the final destination. From tomorrow [terça-feira]we have to show what we are worth”, he declared.
Meloni said he “regretted” the fact that Italian voter turnout in the election was the lowest in a legislative session.
“The challenge is to make people believe in institutions again. Many Italians choose not to trust. It is necessary to rebuild the relationship between State and citizen”, she stressed.
The FdI, which outperformed its coalition partners, with Matteo Salvini’s Liga at 8.9% and Silvio Berlusconi’s Força Italia (FI) at 8%, was the only major party not to be part of the recent government of national unity led by Mario Draghi.
According to the partial results, the right-wing and far-right coalition – led by the FdI and which also includes the FI League – obtained around 43% of the votes in the legislative.
The centre-left bloc, led by Enrico Letta’s Democratic Party, is expected to get 26% of the vote.
The FdI party, led by Giorgia Meloni, was founded in 2012 and has its roots in the Italian Social Movement (MSI), founded by followers of the fascist dictator Benito Mussolini.
