The Metaverse Standards Forum membership group includes many large companies active in the field, from chip makers to video game companies, in addition to other organizations, the group said in a statement announcing building it yesterday.
Notably, however, Apple is currently not among the participants, especially since analysts expect it to be the dominant player in the Metaverse race when it introduces an augmented reality headset now or next year.
The list of forum participants also does not include gaming companies Roblox and Niantic, as well as new Metaverse platforms inspired by the cryptocurrency world, such as The Sandbox or DeCentraland.
Apple has not yet publicly announced plans to develop the headset, according to Bloomberg, though it has provided a product overview. He has not yet responded to a request for comment about the new Metaverse forum.
The introduction of such a device by Apple will put it in direct competition with Meta, which has placed its future at the mercy of the growth of the metaverse world and has invested heavily in devices that make its vision of the interconnected virtual world a reality.
Meta, Facebook’s parent company, has announced its plans to develop an augmented reality headset called the Cambria, which is set to launch this year.
Any company, including members from the world of cryptocurrencies, can join the group, Neil Trivet, chief executive of chipmaker Nvidia, which runs the Metaverse standards forum, said in a statement to Reuters.
He added that the forum is intended to facilitate communication between different standard institutions and companies to achieve “interoperability” in the world of “Metaverse”, regardless of the impact of the absence of “Apple” for this purpose.
