BMW and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the local authority with the portfolio of highway safety, communicated to American consumers that must urgently stop driving or recharging their electric BMW iX and i4, and the NHTSA also provides advice on the best places to park vehicles. As always, it is the American market that reacts most promptly to safety issues, despite the fact that all iX and i4 currently in circulation are only made in Germany, including those sold in Portugal.
As with other constructors, BMW also has to deal with battery-related safety issues. More specifically with the cells used for the formation of packagewhere a possible risk of short circuit in the high voltage circuit may cause a fire.
The cells in question are not made by BMW, a manufacturer that has not yet invested in this capacity, but rather bought them from two external suppliers, namely the South Koreans from Samsung and the Chinese from CATL, everything indicates that they may suffer from a manufacturing defect. The cells are imported and then the cells are formed. packages to be installed in the vehicles, close to the factories where they are produced, the i4 at the Munich plant and the iX at the Dingolfing plant, both in Germany.
In addition to public notices through the place NHTSA, which we reproduce here, BMW will contact each of the owners directly. And the fact that it is a call for the workshop classified as “urgent” will undoubtedly deserve the attention of those interested.
The number of vehicles involved in this memory is very small, because BMW’s electric SUV and saloon began to be offered in the US market recently, with the brand estimating that there are only 83 units at risk (56 iX and 27 i4). Much higher is the number of units sold of these two models in Europe, even in Portugal, about which there is no information.
