What if creating new molecules was as simple as snapping your fingers or joining two Lego pieces together? In fact, it already is, thanks to the work of the three Nobel laureates in Chemistry—Carolyn R. Bertozzi, Morten Meldal, and K. Barry Sharpless—announced Wednesday by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm.
“I am very happy that these three scientists receive this Nobel,” Ana Petronilho, a researcher at the Institute of Chemical and Biological Technology (ITQB, Oeiras), tells the Observer. “I believe that exalts the absolutely fundamental work of synthetic chemistrywhich does not always have an immediate application, but which can have an impact on our lives that goes far beyond what was initially expected”.
