Climate activists meet in Oeiras in solidarity with detained colleagues

Activists from the Student Climate Strike movement meet this Friday at the Oeiras Public Ministry, where the 16 activists detained by the PSP will be heard on Thursday for trying to block access to the Council of Ministers, in Algés.

The activists, who had scheduled a March for the climate in the University City of Lisbonannounced in a statement that the The initiative will finally take place at the Oeiras Public Ministry, at 10 am, in solidarity with the young people detained on Thursday and who will have to appear at that place today.

In the statement, the young people remember that both the actions on Thursday and Friday are calls for an end to fossil fuels by 2030 and 100% renewable and affordable electricity by 2025.

With this Friday’s arrests, the Government “demonstrated that it prefers to repress and ignore young people, rather than accept science and create a plan for a just transition” that guarantees “a future on a habitable planet,” says activist Beatriz Xavier , Puerto Rican. voice of protest.

The students guarantee that this semester “There will be no peace until the Government declares that this will be the last gas winter”and call “a wave of student actions to end the fossil, starting November 13.”

In the statement announcing the international march for climate justice this Friday, the activists called on “students, parents, families, teachers, scientists, precarious people and citizens to participate” in the protest, remembering that humanity lived “the hottest June and July on record.”

Recalling that climate disasters will tend to become more and more extreme and that the Government “has always been attentive to the warnings of climate science”, the organizers of the march regretted that the executive has chosen to “ignore and repress the students who they manifested”.

We cannot allow the government to continue worsening the climate crisis we are already experiencing by choosing to continue investing in fossil fuels and, in particular, fossil gas. (…) The plan compatible with science and climate justice is to end fossil fuels in Portugal by 2030 and transition to 100% renewable and affordable electricity by 2025, ensuring that 2023/24 is the last gas winter in the country,” they warned.

On Thursday morning, the PSP arrested 16 activists for disobedience who blocked access to the Council of Ministers and identified three other young people for having participated in the protest action.

In a statement released about the action, the Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the PSP (Cometlis) stated that at 0h54 on Thursday, in Algés, in the municipality of Oeiras, an unannounced demonstration took place under the terms of the current legislation promoted by the Greve Lisbon Climate and Students group.

The PSP highlights that, during the protest, several young people blocked the access doors to the old facilities of the Ministry of the Sea and the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), where the Council of Ministers took place, chaining themselves and hitting each other. yes to the gates and access doors to the building.

In the statement, the PSP also indicates that an internal investigation process will be opened to clarify the circumstances in which the protests occurred, since the place is monitored by the police.
