CNN Legal Counsel Laura Coates said during her hiatus to her network’s report at the House Select Committee that former President Donald Trump’s actions on January 6, 2021 were “legally criminal”.
Discussing the evidence on January 6 that Trump told a White House photographer not to take pictures, Coates said, “The President said, ‘Don’t show what’s going on here. Are you happy? Are you happy? By December 18, that important meeting. That was the plan. January 6 is the culmination of the plan and effort. It is very clear in their statements that the judges are trying to make one last desperate attempt to ignore the fact that there is no evidence, that your attorney general has told you that there is no evidence. Then he said why should I stop what I started. So inertia is what moves, stays in motion. He didn’t want it to stop. This is a crime.”
Co-host Jake Tupper said, “What do you mean by guilty? Breaking the law?
Coates said: “I believe it is a legal offense for you to knowingly act with a corrupt motive or by corrupt means to obstruct a trial. “Corruption” means dishonesty and acts that you know are illegal or wrong. Everyone advised him not to do it. So whether the Justice Department wants to sue is another story, but remember, we’re not talking rocket science in the sense that we have to use any direct evidence. It comes indirectly, there is also cumulation, we see it here.”
