Yerevan .. 300 were arrested in protests against the government

Armenian police on Tuesday arrested about 300 opposition supporters trying to block streets in the capital, Yerevan, who have witnessed anti-government protests for a month.

Hundreds of opposition supporters tried to block streets in central Yerevan, AFP reported.

The Armenian Police Department says that “286 people have been temporarily detained for violating the legal requirements of law enforcement officials.”

It is noteworthy that opposition parties have held rallies since mid-April to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan due to the conflict with Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Opposition parties have accused Pashinyan of planning to hand over to Baku the Armenian-controlled areas of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Two fierce rivals, Armenia and Azerbaijan, fought in the 2020s and 1990s in the long-disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Six weeks of fighting in the fall of 2020 killed more than 6,500 people and ended a ceasefire agreement mediated by Russia.
