Spain’s central government has decided to lower ticket prices for public transport starting September 1st to counter the inflationary crisis and the high cost of living. Madrid has proposed a package of measures aimed at solving the problem of huge and rationalization of energy consumption in anticipation of the approaching winter, which has been approved by the regional governments in all regions of Spain.

The proposed measures include: reducing ticket prices, including monthly, weekly and annual passes, and providing free tickets to customers who travel on suburban trains, and subscription fees will also be free until the end of the year. In other regions, a decision was made to increase the discount rate for tickets from 30% to 50%.

The fruits of this decision began to be embodied on the ground with its entry into force: yesterday, the frequency of using trains increased by 50% compared to September 1, 2019, 425,000 free season tickets were purchased, according to the Ministry of Transport. The decision will be valid for three months, that is, until December 31, and is expected to be used by tens of thousands of Spaniards using public transport.
