Two deaths in a hit-and-run in Canada. The police are investigating whether it was an accident or a deliberate attack.

The driver of the van, a 38-year-old man, turned himself in to police, who are still investigating whether the incident was accidental or a deliberate attack.

Two people died and nine were injured this Tuesday in the city of Amqui, Canada, after they were struck by a flatbed truck, in an incident that authorities are still investigating whether it was accidental or deliberate. According to the BBC, the driver of the van, a 38-year-old man from that region, turned himself in to the police and was arrested.

Also according to the British chain, the authorities went to the place around 3:00 p.m. local time this Tuesday (7:00 p.m. in Lisbon) after the hit-and-run occurred in that city in the Canadian province of Quebec.

The incident comes just over a month after another similar case in the same province: in early February, two children were killed and six injured after a bus driver deliberately rammed his vehicle into a day care center.

The two fatalities in Tuesday’s incident are two men, one in his 70s and the other in his 60s. In addition, several children are among the injured at the hospital.

The BBC reports on what two witnesses told the local newspaper Le Devoir, including one who said he saw the van speeding up as it headed towards the pedestrian sidewalk. Another called the incident a “local tragedy.”

The authorities, for their part, are still investigating whether the incident was the product of a deliberate attack or a mere accident. “There is no longer any danger in the area and there is only one suspect,” said the police spokeswoman for the Canadian province of Quebec, in an effort to reassure the local population.
