What do Steven Seagal, De Gaulle’s grandson, and an Italian princess have in common? They are all supporters of Putin.

Congress of the International Movement of Russophiles took place in Moscow and was attended by Sergei Lavrov. “Europe has to ally itself with Russia,” defended the grandson of General De Gaulle.

What would bring together, in the same event, figures as apparently different as the actor Steven Seagal, Pierre de Gaulle (grandson of the famous French general) and the Italian princess Vittoria Alliata di Villafranca? The question, which at first glance may seem worthy of a puzzle, actually has a simple answer: all these names are ardent supporters of Russia, so much so that they were recently present at a congress of the International Movement of Russophiles in Moscow.

The positions of these public figures are not exactly new. Seagal, by the way, has been Russia’s “special ambassador” for several years and was recently awarded the Order of Friendship by Vladimir Putin.

Pierre de Gaulle, in the recent past, used his last name to support the Moscow regime on behalf of the family. “My grandfather had a very deep and intense knowledge of the Russian leaders, as well as the people. (…) And he was well aware of the geographical interest and the need for Europe and France to ally with Russia.“, said in congress the grandson of Charles de Gaulle, who in interviews has described the Ukrainian government as a regime of “oligarchs and neo-Nazi military groups”.

The De Gaulle family, for its part, has sought to distance itself from these statements. Yves de Gaulle, Pierre’s older brother, recently told Le Parisien newspaper that his brother’s positions “concern only him and only him”: “They do not represent me, our family and much less General“.

In total, the event had about 90 participants, with Seagal as the protagonist. The 1990s action movie star described himself as “100% Russophile and 1 million% Russian.” Also present was the author and Italian princess Vittoria Alliata di Villafranca, 73, best known for having been responsible for the first Italian translation of The Lord of the ringsby JRR Tolkien.

Villafranca, whose life story includes clashes with the Italian mafia and Opus Dei for control of the family’s ancestral palace, called the climate of “Russophobia” a “new form of colonization” and compared it to the Allied invasion of Sicily. during the World War. II, which put an end to Nazi and fascist rule over the island.

During the speech, according to The Guardian, the princess also made a somewhat bizarre statement: in which he expressed his fear that the new generations of European boys are being pressured to marry cows.

I am here to show that there are other people in the world who share the vision. [da Rússia] about the world (…), to show a housewife in Sicily that it is normal to look in amazement at her son who wants to marry a cow”.

Anyone who might think that the event was a mere curiosity, without major repercussions for the Kremlin, is wrong. Among those present was Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who spoke and also read a letter signed by Vladimir Putin. “We are not only seeing neo-Nazism, we are witnessing direct Nazism, which is increasingly plaguing Europe,” said the Russian ruler. “We are watching history being destroyed before our very eyes.”
