A group of 48 countries, including Portugal, condemned this Friday in a joint statement at the UN “the illegal transfers of weapons from North Korea to Russia, which significantly helped” Moscow to carry out its war against Ukraine.
The statement, read by the deputy ambassador of the United States, Robert Woods, highlights that this transfer of “ballistic missiles and other munitions” represents a violation of at least three Security Council resolutions designed under the sanctions regime against North Korea, mainly due to the development of sanctions. its nuclear program.

For this reason, the 48 signatories (to which the European Union is added) He called on the Council “to assume its responsibilities (to) combat North Korea’s threats to international peace and security.”.
Among the signatories there is not a single African State and there is only one Latin American State (Argentina). Among Asians, only South Korea and Japan have signed it, the rest being the United States, the countries of the European Union and their usual allies: Australia, Canada, New Zealand and small peaceful states.
The war was triggered by the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
