Since leaving the Obama administration in 2015, former Attorney General Eric Holder has lived on as chairman of the Democratic National Committee Rebuilt, an organization whose stated goal is to end partisan intrigues.
Holder filed lawsuits across the country to thwart efforts to change the state legislature, alleging that some of the voters were disqualified for alleged fraud.
Holder said the fraud also played a role in gun violence in America.
On MSNBC’s The 11th Hour on Wednesday, Holder told host Stephanie Rule that “structural issues” with our representative government are fueling the “gun lobby”.
“[W]We also need to solve structural problems,” he said. “You know, the problem here is fraud, a place where people can side with the gun lobby, which has special interests against the will of their voters, and not be subject to any electoral influences because they are safe. here. So I think the lack of will is a combination of structural problems and we need to go to a better place. ”
Holder argued that if there was no rogue queue, more Democrats could be elected and pass legislation requiring background checks.
“The lines were drawn – the lines were adjusted so that it was almost impossible for the other side to win,” Holder said. “And if you’re in the Republican safe seat, all you care about is the primaries, not the general. And the way to thwart the main opponent is to walk further to the right and take denser positions to avoid passing on the right.
“If you’re in this safe Republican seat and the Democratic candidate comes along and says, ‘You know, I want to fight for gun safety, you’re safe,'” he continued. “So you can only serve your base, you can serve the very edge of your base, and you don’t have to deal with or do the same with more constituencies than you want. So, polls show that 80.90% of people in this country say we should check their background before anyone buys a gun. You don’t see that in the law.”
Holder attacked the Texas Legislature and said that if it weren’t for his “deceptive authority”, there might be people responsible “preventing such shootings.”
