Porto opens registration for the housing improvement program for people with disabilities

The Porto City Council has opened registration for the NiveLar program, which aims to financially support people with disabilities or permanent disabilities residing in the city who need to improve the mobility and accessibility conditions of their homes, it was announced this Monday.

In a statement, the municipality of Porto reveals that NiveLar, from the municipal company Domus Social, has an initial amount of 50 thousand euros, It is expected that the financial aid granted may correspond to 100% of eligible expenses.up to a limit of 7,500 euros per dwelling.

NiveLar is aimed at residents who do not live in social housing, people with disabilities with an accredited degree of disability equal to or greater than 60%.

Both homeowners and tenants can apply, provided they obtain permission from the owner to carry out the work.

Support is provided in the form of payment, upon presentation of an invoice for the work performed.

The regulation establishes that support is intended for carrying out works that eliminate barriers inside homes of people in wheelchairs, unable to walk long distances, with sensory difficulties, among other special needs.

The document was unanimously approved by the Porto Municipal Assembly held on 21 May.

On that date, when asked about the budget allocated to the programme, the Mayor of Porto stated that, once the 50 thousand euros have been exhausted, the programme will be reinforced.

“In the executive this happened very quickly. It is good that people are alert about this program, because it is good news and, unfortunately, it will not have much impact on the media,” said Rui Moreira, in May.

This Monday, the municipality reveals that, “as a result of the analysis of the contributions collected during the public consultation period, in addition to the works inside the homes, the program also included the common parts of the properties.”

Support is provided in the form of monetary payments.

Payment will be available in a single payment at the end of the intervention.or, exceptionally and at the request of the beneficiary, in stages, with a 30% advance payment to mark the work.

With this support, it is possible to carry out demolition work to improve accessibility within the home, install handrails and grab bars, as well as adapted sanitary fittings, among other interventions.

“Through NiveLar, the municipality aims to guarantee the full exercise of the citizenship rights of people with special needs, since promoting accessibility constitutes a fundamental element in the quality of life of citizens,” concludes the municipality.
